Does your website show your process plan?
Hi Reader,
When Marty McFly finds himself stuck in 1955, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
He has one goal: get back to 1985 and fix the future, before it disappears altogether.
But even with all that urgency, Marty struggles to move forward because he doesn’t have a plan.
It’s only when he finds 1955 Doc Brown that things start to change.
Doc lays out the next steps in simple, structured terms:
- Harness the lightening strike at the exact right moment
- Hit 88 miles per hour and 1.21 gigawatts
- Try not the mess with the timeline (or risk disappearing forever)
That plan, as impossible as it is, is what gives Marty momentum. It’s what stops him from giving it up. It's what keeps the audience hooked.
It’s Marty's process plan.
A process plan doesn’t have to be complicated, most of the time a 3-simple-step structure is enough to help someone feel confident along the journey (whether in an '80s sci-fi film, or your customer's path to you!)
Why does this matter for your website messaging?
There are 2 types of process plans you should have on your website:
A Direct Plan
The exact steps someone follows once they decide to work with you.
- Example: First workshop → Build your strategy → Launch your new offer with clarity.
- Marty’s example: harness the lightening strike at the exact moment and get the Delorean back to 1985.
A Transitional Plan
A lower commitment path that helps someone move closer to working with you.
- Example: Download a guide → Attend a live session → Book a 1:1 call.
- Marty’s example: don’t mess with history while we wait to get you back to the future at the right moment.
The goal is always the same, make the next step feel safe and obvious, no matter the stakes. Show the outcome clearly.
Real-world examples:
If thinking about a fictional time traveller makes it a little bit harder to visualise, don't worry, here are a few process plan messaging soundbites in action:
If you’re a finance coach:
- Without a plan: "I help you gain clarity in your business."
- With a plan: "Schedule your first call → We’ll dive deep into your business structure across three focused clarity sessions → I’ll handle the numbers while you stay focused on growing your business."
If you’re a brand designer:
- Without a plan: "I design brands that tell your story."
- With a plan: "Book a discovery call → We’ll craft your brand strategy through art direction and sentiment analysis → In just three weeks, you’ll launch visuals you love."
If you’re a SaaS startup founder:
- Without a plan: "Our platform streamlines customer onboarding."
- With a plan: "Book a demo → We'll create a custom onboarding plan in just one week → Launch faster with tailored support."
Your clients might not be Marty McFly, but for them, the stakes are high running a business, and in that way, they're the same - they need a process plan.
