That time my boss trusted me with a team of 8 (and what it taught me about websites)

Hi Reader,

When I was 23, I was put in charge of a team of 8 content writers.

I was absolutely bricking it.

I’d just joined a fast-growing scale-up as the second-ever marketing hire, and our challenge was clear: launch a whole new content arm to attract the best tech startups and VCs in just a few short months.

No pressure, right? 🫠

Luckily, my boss (and now dear friend) Lisa Winning believed in me. This is someone who built a tech platform with 5 million users, exited successfully, and sold the IP rights to Penguin and Warner Bros. So when she backed me, I showed up hard.

That scrappy team became a real unit – interviewing brilliant startup founders (like the team behind Thursday dating!), unearthing unexpected stories, and making the tech world feel a little more human.

And the payoff was this:

When the site launched, that content drove a 189% spike in traffic. We built a solid organic lead engine. Socials got so much easier to manage because the content strategy all connected back into the site. We got a comment from Spanx founder Sara Blakely. And I even got promoted!

Why am I telling you this?

Because your website is never just a storefront.

It’s your first impression. Your strongest sales tool. And if you do it right – your best source of trust, resonance and conversion.

That experience taught me how vital it is to get your message clear, structured, and strategically aligned with your offer and your audience. Not just beautiful sentences; but your meaning, value, direction.

That’s the work I do with Bravebird clients now. And if you’re ready to put in the hard yards – to actually nail your message – I’ve got one Bravebird Boost spot left this month, and only a couple for July. DM me to get it all booked in. Learn more about exactly what happens in yours here.

Here’s what’s happening this week at Bravebird HQ:

1. Say it Right is live! My new strategic homepage framework is ready for you!

If your website’s ever felt “off” – not quite reflecting the depth of your work – this is for you.

✔️ 20+ insight-packed pages

✔️ Homepage structure with messaging psychology baked in

✔️ A clear framework, checklists and video walkthrough examples

✔️ Bonus: if you grab it this week, you’ll get a free video walkthrough of your own homepage by yours truly.

If you've already grabbed a copy (thank you!) hit reply and let me know how you found it!

2. Ask Me Anything – in The Wilder Collective (Friday 13 June)

I’m doing a voice-note-led AMA inside the amazing Wilder Collective all about how to use AI to sharpen your marketing and processes (without losing your tone, your audience or your sanity). Bring your questions! Doors open Wednesday if you’re not yet a member.

3. Messaging tip of the week: What belongs in your About section?

Your About section builds trust; but it shouldn’t steal the spotlight from your audience.

Think:

– Credential yourself; lived experience, your training, values

– Prove it; with a few clear, human testimonials (ideally in different formats: from video, to text, to audio)

– Tie it back to why you're a good fit for your ideal client, have you ever stood in their shoes?

This isn't just about showing how great you are, it's about giving your reader a reason to believe in you over your competitors, to validate your connection to them, so they feel safe in buying from you.

As always, hit reply and let me know if something here lands with you or if you have any questions.

So much good stuff coming your way.
